ORCID is a global nonprofit organization that enables connections between researchers and their articles and research datausing a unique ID (the ORCID iD). Over two million researchers from all over the world now have an ORCID iD. To foster adoption of ORCID in Germany a three-year project, "ORCID DE -Promotion of the Open Researcher and Contributor ID in Germany," was launched in February 2016, with funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Through integrations with more than 230 researcher systems and databases ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) facilitates connections between researchers and their works, awards, and affiliations. The idea is that, by getting and using an ORCID iD, everyone who contributes to the research process can be easily connected to their publications, research data, and their other research products (e.g. software, peer review, presentations) enabling these contributions to both become more visible and to be reliably linked to their creators.

ORCID has great potential to help standardize connections between research information, previously scattered across multiple systems and databases, both improving discoverability and reducing the data collection and reporting burden for researchers and administrators alike. ORCID’s openness and its increasing adoption internationally mean that it is fast becoming a long-term globally used and recognized standard identifier in everyday academic life.

The goal of the ORCID DE project is to support German universities and research institutions that are considering implementing ORCID to do so in a coordinated and sustainable approach. The project will address organizational, technical and legal issues alike. In addition to providing a central contact point for universities and research
institutions, ORCID DE will focus on the cross-linkage and use of ORCID in open access repositories and publication services. The project also seeks to connect ORCID with the Integrated Authority File (Gemeinsame Normdatei, GND).

ORCID DE’s project partners are the Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the German National Library (DNB) and the Bielefeld University Library. The project was initiated by the German Initiative for Network Information (DINI).

The official start date for the project is 1. May 2016.

German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, DNB)

The German National Library is entrusted with the task of collecting, permanently archiving, bibliographically classifying and making available to the general public all German and German-language publications from 1913, foreign publications about Germany, translations of German works, and the works of German-speaking emigrants published abroad between 1933 and 1945. The German National Library maintains co-operative relations on the national and international level. It is, for instance, the leading partner in developing and maintaining rules and standards in Germany and plays a significant role in the development of international standards. The German National Library is involved in a large number of projects aimed at the development and deployment of technical and communicative infrastructures for the information society.

Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office

The Helmholtz Open Science Coordination office fosters open science within the Helmholtz Association. Their staff provides

support to researchers on open access, access and re-use of research data, and other topics in the realm of digital science. The Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office is situated at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

Bielefeld University Library

For more than ten years the Bielefeld University Library has been operating the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), the leading search engine for open access publication. Bielefeld University Library has been a partner in national and international research projects e.g. DRIVER, PEER, OpenAIRE, Europeana Cloud and the DFG funded project "Automatic enrichment of OAI metadata". Within ORCID DE, the Bielefeld University Library contributes technical expertise in the area of OAI metadata aggregation and enrichment as well as knowledge of workflows of search engine based indexation.
